I just recently started working at the Clothes Closet. What a joy to work so closely with women who have such a heart for God and other people. For those of you that don't know much about what we do, we are a mission oriented facility, so we have volunteers Monday - Friday 9:00 a.m. till noon, 1:00 till 4:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. till noon. We receive donated clothes and misc. items during those times. Sometimes, people leave clothing and items in bags or boxes at our door. We do not buy anything, but do give a donation letter if requested.
All items are sorted. Clothes in good shape are hung or folded and put on shelves and racks for sale, the same with toys or other items. The items we can't use we send onto St Louis and they are distributed elsewhere. We save old T-shirts for some who need rags. We save wool items for several people. One uses wool for a woman's work shop in St Louis, where they teach women how make purses or other items and mend socks and sweaters. The old ragged jeans are dropped off at the shelter workshop where they make them into rugs. We try to utilize as much of the donated items as possible.
The items sold in the Clothes Closet are at very reasonable prices, most for a dollar or less. After expenses are paid, any excess funds are distributed in Knox County. Recently we were able to help the Food Cupboard in the purchase of their building. This was an unusual way to distribute funds. Most of the time we help children's programs such as the school teachers or distribute them to families in need. People with ongoing medical problems are another priority. We live by our mission statement: To supply the people of Knox and surrounding counties with clothes and other items for little cost. Secondly, to help those in financial need in Knox County.
We each work a morning or afternoon shift. With your help we are hoping to have two people on each shift. Because this is a Parish Mission any person attending one of the parish churches is welcome and encouraged to volunteer. Please pray and see if this may be a ministry you would be interested in. Men are always welcome.
